  • Relationship between vray camera and max camera

We are getting used to the new features of vray and are currently looking at the vray physical camera which we like a lot. However, if we create a 28mm vray camera (for example) and align it exactly to a 28mm max camera, the view through the lens is slightly different - the max camera seems slightly wider angle. I suppose I expected this to be the case, but is there any way to match the view of the vray camera to the max camera as we would like to use the real world parameters of the vray cameras in our ongoing jobs. (it would need to be an accurate match as we have masks set up using the older max camera which would need to be reproduced by the vray camera)

I assume this would not be possible, but I though I may as well ask the question.
    Kind Regards,
    Richard Birket

It seems that the max camera ignores the floating point values so if you have 28.8 it reads more like 28, while the vraycamera uses the full precision. This is what i think, must of the times setting the number with no floating values makes them "equal".

It may not be quite possible to match the two. If you need an exact match, it would be best to use a standard 3dsmax camera.

With the V-Ray camera, changing the target focus distance slightly modifies your FOV, like it does with a real photographic cameras (because the lens shifts back and forth compared to the film plate). While this is an effect from the real world, it will make it difficult to match the FOV to a standard camera.

why not create your max camera then switch your camera view to perspective then create a vray camera then hit ctrl-c to match camera to view and your vray camera should be the same as the view right?

nope, if Vlado's explanation of the Vray Camera is correct.
