  • getting a tv screen to glow

Ok guys, I've searched around and found very little to help me here. What is the best way to get a tv screen (or LCD monitor, or projector screen) to have an image on it that glows and lights the surrounding environment the way that a real life tv screen (or LCD monitor, or projector screen) would?

I've tried putting a Vraymtlwrapper on a standard material, and while it seems to have a slight effect on the surroundings, the screen itself doesn't seem to glow, or just look bright enough to emit the light that's coming from it. Yes, I could do it in post, but I don't want to!
    Kind Regards,

either use the map as a map in a vraylightmtl or crank up the rgb level in the output rollout.

I seem to recall that upping the output of a vraylight material causes 'dirty' renderings (poor solutions as opposed to a vraylight)

I'm now trying to put a vraylight behind a quadpatch which has the image mapped onto it, but with a copy of the material in the refraction slot set to , say, 25%. I might be getting somewhere...

I've increased the Generate GI setting in Vray object properties with good success.

You could use a hdr map as the emitter image. It should give u better and cleaner results due to the higher range.
Another option is creating a standard light with projector option ON, and then using an image of your choice to light the scene coming from the TV screen.
The glow...come on, a little post won´t kill you!

If reflection of the screen is not necessary, I put the screen image into a vray light material, and set it to multiplier of 1 so that the image looks correct. I then set the screen geometry to a generate GI multiplier of 5 or so.

if you want the screen itself to glow you can always render a seperate pass and use max's glow effect

You can use the blur render effect and set it to blur off the illuminance....produces nice results.
