Here is the latest from Ideate Inc. as of August 15, 2007.

    Hi,

I just wanted to update you that Chaos Group collected all of my dongles
this morning. I asked about the time frame to ship them to my customers
and they said it should be complete within 2 weeks.

I appreciate your patience with this matter.

    Best regards,

    Rahul Verma

So in two week I should have my dongle as should the other Ideate customers via Chaos Group. To bad Chaos didn't just ship them out themselves to begin with. Oh, well.

    Cheers,

I find it interesting how he says "my customers" ... given the fact they were trying to screw you all over and make a profit.

Pretty sad that Chaosgroup had to step in cause this guy wouldnt send them out free of charge.

We got our dongles today from VisMasters!!!

We have two copies of Vray... both pointing to the other persons computer for the license. (which is the way max 8 was working with the software license)

I installed the driver. Installed the new version 1.5 for Max 9 (we still have max 8 with 1.5 rc3).

I entered his computer name for the license sever.... and NO DICE... its not finding the license.....

He as well did the same thing! using the local host as well as trying to enter his computer name.

now I dont have the dongle installed on my machine (we did receive 2 dongles); figuring thats why i entered his computer name for the license server....

        Am i making any sense?

Can anyone point me in the right direciton... We did email Teddi to see if we need a new license number... but i from my experience the license comes from the dongle....

        Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah the licence is on the dongle. Can you open the vrlservice html so you can see the licence on the dongle.

You need to use port 30304 in vray and maybe try the ip address and not the computer name or localhost

FYI - Vismasters isn't charging for the dongle itself, but shipping only - so yeah, make sure if there are any charges, it's only for shipping. Be sure that's what your reseller is charging you for...
Ha! I ordered mine from Studica. They charge $30 for the dongles. Then I wrote to Chaosgroup just to confirm that the dongles are free. I got an email from them stating that yes, the dongles are free, you only pay for shipping.

So I send this back to Studica and asking why are they charging $30 bucks for it? They said the $30 bucks is for the shipping.

I don't remember when was the last time I had to pay $30 bucks for a product that weighs, what.... 20 grams....?

While on the subject, why not charge $129.95 for shipping and say, that titanium alloy and extra space materials used in packaging to protect the contents. Not to mention the extra police protection during shipment...

Update. I just got this email from studica:

"...My boss has approved a credit to be issued in your favor for the amount of $22.00 we do apologize and hope to keep you as a customer. I will be issuing a credit to your card on file today. So all you will be charged is $8.00 for the shipping and handling charges..."

Well its good they refunded you. But also makes them look bad as well.
As they have already said the dongle costs X to ship now they are refunding you Y to leave only Z being for shipping.

I would reply thanking them for the refund but due to their under the table tactics for making a quick buck you can no longer be a customer of theirs.

Sure its a small amount of money... but geez.

                      Apparently not with 1.5 final.

There is a software option available (according to Vlado) but its only for exceptional circumstances and isnt included with the installer.

Ahhh....So the final will not have that option available...Gotcha...I guess that will cut down on the piracy issue.

hmm... I doubt it. 3dsmax used to be dongle based, didn't stop it from being the most pirated of the major graphic programs.

Like we have noted before, the dongles are there not because of piracy issues, but in order to make it easier to transfer the V-Ray license around in case your machine breaks down, or you want to move to another workstation etc. Having a dongle saves on having to email us and wait for a reply on each of those occasions (which do happen quite often, it seems). Eventually we would like everyone to have a dongle, as that would make things a lot easier for everyone, especially the users (well, at least we hope so ).

                              Best regards,

Could you possibly include the software version until most of the users resolve their dongle issues?
