I will second the "Rock" option, they build very good machine and look at the spec on this baby and thats without add ons you can also switch the graphic card to a Quadro and the rams racks up to 3gb

There is a review in the latest custom pc (UK only I believe) and they usually get great reviews in all the trade rags.

I would go with the Intel Core 2 Duo T7600 2.33GHz option.

i have a M50 from DELL with a quadro card and 1 Gb ram at home , and im very happy with it. Although it´s an old machine, i still can run max 8 without a problem, zbrush, combustion, all of them are about the same. Once it fell down from a table and here there is now, working like a champ. No problems in 4 years and only one full fresh reinstall, plus zillions of demo installations and tons of crap stored...they seem not bother the laptop . Editing video? No problem either!
Im surprised to read a M70 was a bad purchase...

Sounds like a good reason not to go with the p4 based system since the core duo is way faster runs cooler and uses less battery.

Well I'm not entirely sure the WAN card just didn't decide to die. My IT department has been lazy about sending it back for a replacement. I assume it fried because of the heat. But who knows. Yes, i agree with your other reasons not to use the systems, but hey I'm not paying for it.

I'm seriously considering the MacBook Pro because I can do Max and VRay on it... it's a pretty beefy machine, and about the same price as a similarily configured Dell (and a hell of a lot thinner and nice looking).

i'll second the macbook option as I have one as my personal machine now, and once you get a couple things configured through bootcamp it runs flawlessly for the most part, especially if you want a laptop that's actually portable...

I've had an m70-pentiumM chip through work, and we now also have an m90 there also. I think the powerbrick for the m90 is bigger and heavier than the laptop itself, and that's saying a lot as the m90 is bigger and heavier than most dell desktops these days.

The only good thing it's got going for it is the graphics card. We have the 1900 pixel screen on the m70 and it's actually too small, really hard to see, unless you're 2 inches from it, and it's fairly dim also. although maybe i'm just getting old....

Definately go core duo though, our m70 with the pentium M chip is over twice as slow.

I noticed last night that Boxx has been offering laptops. I'm rather curious about their quality. Their other machines are top-notch so I wouldn't expect any less.

Be carefull with Alienware, their laptop's default warranty is for one year. It's too short for a laptop. It's easy to change something on a desktop computer but on a laptop is often hard. A 3 years warranty is the best choice. The price for 3 years is expensive with alienware (265 $)

Alienware M9700 here, no problems at all. It is mainly my gaming computer, but I can work in Viz just fine. I considered the core duo model, but I opted for the M9700 because of the sli gpu.

i have a HP dv9000 with amd turion x2, but i recomend de same model but with an intel 2 core duo of 2ghz and a video card of 512 of ram, anyway for rendering i have 4 workstations,,, i use this laptop for some work and modeling,, and for vray the benchmark is better with the intel 2 core duo of 2ghz. hp has good prices if you see dell o alienware,, the most important is that the new models of hp has a better lcd, i had a hp8000 and the diference with de dv9000 is big. the hp laptops keyboard has a numeric pad, the dell and mac laptops dont have it.. for me as an architect is too useful...

that has nothing to do with brands... normally the 17" comes with num-pads as they have room for that stuff. 14" and 15" are too small to include a num-pad.

esp as very few models comes with integrated video memory. this one has 128 integrated and 128 shared... and 7400 is a pretty decent card for laptops...
