  • vraysun - heavy shadows.

Hey guys, I am finding that while I get a very realistic looking result from the vraysun/sky combo. it seems to have very dark shadows, while at the same time it brightens up my colours way to much.
For example a dark grey turns into a very light grey.
if I use gamma for example to lighten the shadows, it makes the colours even further from their actual colour.
Does anyone have a work around this?
    thanks Jim

    are you using LWF?

Cause if you are you will need to adjust your colors and bitmaps accordingly. Maybe just via the colorcorrect plugin.

I use LWF and Vray Sun and Sky, and sometimes it seems that the shadows are too dark. They may be physically correct, but they appear too dark.

Try adjusting cam exposure or sun multiplier so that things appear just a bit overbright. Then use Reinhard burn (about 0.5) to take down the hotspots. Also consider detaching the sky from the sun so you can adjust the sky brightness independently of the sun. This way you can increase ambient sky light to brighten shadows.

Also try getting rid of the vray sky map altogether (for lighting at least) and use a quality HDRI in the environment lighting slot, or mapped inside a dome light. I find the shadow brightness looks much more realistic with an HDRI creating the ambient environment light.

render image and adjust exposure and gamma in PS, sometimes that does the trick depending on the project
