  • vray 1.5 x64 advantages?

ive heard from the folks over at discreet that the main advantage of the new 64 bit build of max, is the ability to work on larger scenes due to being able to address more memory..

however this is something we can already do with 32 bit max, running on an xp64 machine... so im not too impressed there..(i smell marketing) when pressed on what else is different i was told about various viewport and editing speedups that may or may not be down to 64 bitness.

my question is will we actually see a noticeable speedup /difference when running a 64 bit version of vray?

apologies if this is already discussed somewhere else, just point me there!

Actually I have not gotten max to address more then 4 gigs of memory per process using 32bit max on 64bit OS.

        No.. it isnt.

Vlado said theres a minor speed boostin the works but thats not 64bit specific, all 64 bit does is allow you touse more ram. A great deal of time I spend on jobs now is figuring out how to get vray to actually render my damn scenes so this is more than appreciated.

Reckon you could do that with a 3billion poly scene with displacement and QMC AA settings of 1,10 and get it to render less than 15minutes per frame?

I dont even want to think how long it would have taken to create an 11gb pagefile

Vray should be a lot faster because storing the scene in ram reduces page access time.

Things like displacement etc should really have a big boost.

the only disadvantage is: where do i get six 4GB memsticks, to break my new 12GB limit?

lol. shame my dual xeon machine is on a super micro mobo which ca handle up to 12gb ram in 6 slots however i think its too old to put 64bit chips on it
