  • DOF Confusion

For the life of me I cannot get Dof to work. The attachment shows the settings so, if anyone can shed some light on this - I will be most grateful.

    Units are metres.

    Thanks

Make your f- number smaller - it'll open up your lens a lot more - as a result it'll let more light in and burn out your render so turn up your shutter speed to compensate. Try dropping your f number to around 2 and bring your shutter to around 125 off the top of my head - get the blurriness correct and use shutter to expose.

Also the settings in the render rollout have no effect on your scene when using a vray camera. you can just turn that dof off and just leave the cameras dof on.

        Ok, got it.

        F-number = 0.1
        Shutter Speed = 100,000
        Film Speed = 100

        Thanks for your help.

Incidentially, if I wanted to do Dof in post (After Effects) is there a plugin that will allow me to do that ? Something similar to Richard Rosenmans Photoshop plugin.

Try something like lenscare by frischluft - It can use a vray depth channel render element as a control layer so you can pull focus and so on - does nice puffy highlights too.

either that or we get richard to update his plugin for AE hehehe
does lenscare also have the option to use the coverage channel?

              No, lenscare use only z-channel.
But it's still best looking post dof.

Watch those 2 grids in front and behind of your target - theyre the DOF guides and note when something starts to get noticably blurry.

I'm finding this too difficult to get predicatable results.

When I zoom into an object - the focus grids become very narrow and therefore make the focused area minimal and relatively useless. To remedy this, I increase the f-number but then the shutter speed needs to be modified.

Anyway, looks like it will have to be done in post.
