  • difference between helpfile and real life...

    hi all

I don't understand the difference between the vrayhelp and my own expierence with vraysun and sky.

    the help shows this:

the problem for me is the brightness of the sky. in the examples the sky is always lit right and bright, wihle the brightness of the images changes. that's correct.

but if I want to copy that, this happens:

    my settings are:

the only things that changes is the shutter speed. 125, 250, 500

the vraysun and sky are default.

vlado, wich colormapping did you use for the renderings in the help?
I also think the vignetting is very strong, is that right? I know my material for the walls appears almost white, but it isn't, it's 200, 200, 200.
It would be great to get some tips. thanks in advance.

    best regards

Possibly the help file was compiled with images done with earlier versions of sun and sky. if i recall correctly they were 10X brighter at the default value of 1.0

this would be a possible reason, but I am not happy with it.

      vlado what do you mean?
I think the difference is big and there must be an explaining for this.

Vlado might be using srgb for those images too.

this option really changes the brightness. I don't find an explanation in the help about that... what does the srgb option change?

Yep - it's almost like using a gamma of 2.2 on your image so it'll leave the shadow and highlight areas similar but brighten the midtones a lot.

                thanks for reply...

but why can I not save the image with the curve applied. the saved image looks like the one without srgb.

                best regards

Yes that's correct - the srgb button on the vray viewer will only preview what the image looks like in srgb space, it doesn't apply the colour correction to the image. To do this, set your gamma to 2.2 in the colour mapping rollout.

If you save the image as an HDR image it will be saved with the srgb applied.
