  • Vray proxy

I´m gonna begin a project next week and due to highres models I need to use vray proxy, with which i´ve never worked before. So, I need to know i fthere are any known issues when working with Vray proxy?

Very few - Ideally I'd try to avoid using vray proxies if you can avoid it as they'll slow your render times down - the only reason to use them is if you're running out of memory while the scene is trying to render but if you can get away with it then don't bother with the proxies.

We routinely render scenes with a lot of proxies, 100's of hi-poly trees and plants are not unheard of. We have had a few that inexplicitly have lost there materials but it is very rare.

About limitations - animated proxies don't produce motion blur. When only the camera is moving, they are calculated with correct motionblur, but if e g. the camera is static and the proxy is moving = no motionblur.

We rendered an animation of a private school that was in the middle of
a forrest. We used 2500 xfrog trees for the mountain in the background.
Actually, all the tress in the scene were proxies exept for about 6 in the
forground. We did not use the opacity maps for them because they were
far enough away. Also, there were only 3 different tree types, all instanced. The rendertimes were not bad concidering what we were rendering.

          Regards,

main thing to remember when using proxies is if you are doing a forest for example.. with 3 different tree types.. make 3 proxies.. one for each tree type.. and then just instance them to make up the forest. If you make one BIG proxy for instance the render time will be really slow and the memory advantage wont be as noticable.

Also you can only Instance proxies you cannot copy them.

One more thing.. the dymamic memory spinner in the Vray:system rollout still affects proxies even if the memory type is set to static. So if your still running out of memory with proxies trying playing with the dynamic memory amount or just sticking the whole scene into dynamic memory by changing the memory type to static.

But dont forget... dynamic memory/proxies will also be slower than straight mesh and static memory... just how much slower depends on quite a few things.

Thanks guys. I think I need to use about 20 proxys at the most, and rendertimes isn´t a problem ´cause I have a christmas-render-weekend ahead To bad that maxwell doesn´t have proxys. This project got a bit messed up ´cause maxwell cant handle many polygons/highres renders.
