  • Modelling Question

    Hi everyone, happy new year,

I will be modeling a room in the Walters Museum in Baltimore MD, and there is some serious molding going on in the cieling (way beyond my skill level to model manually). I was wondering if anyone has any advice as to how to get a realistic result using displacement maps instead of modeling. Here is a pic of what im trying to recreate:

    Thanks very much!

yes to model this is to die... you should consider mudbox or zbrush for this.

I think it depends on how close you are going to get to this detail, i would take high res photo's without flash, desaturate the images and use them as displacement maps.

if you have access to a light rig, there's an app somewheres that will create normal/displacement maps from photos you take. You would take 4 pics with the light pointing from each direction. Hope that makes sense.

I agree normal maps would be the way to go if you can get in there to set up lighting (Really just need one light that someone could hold on a pole) Here's a tut do do it in PS, I think NVidia has an app to convert them automaticaly. http://www.zarria.net/nrmphoto/nrmphoto.html

oh wow that is a good idea thanks,
however that thing is like 40 feet in the air and im not allowed to use any other lights in the room because of the paintings! I think ill just try to make my own dmap like natty said. The detail isnt that important.

              thanks for the replies
