Isn't it developed by a different company? I wondered how that works? Does ChaosGroup sell the basic render engine to developers, who then develp the interface for different software packages?
And I think its going to cost more than the cost of Sketchup itself
I wouldn't want to speak for them, but i guess they get a license of the SDK (full, not the shaders-only one), and develop the connection with the various applications.
I know Corey from ASGVis does lurk around here at times, maybe he could be more specific.
I've had a couple requests from architects around the office to purchase a copy of Vray for Sketchup (we have like 10 floating sketchup licenses). I'm not sure why they are asking me. I don't authorize software purchases. I'm just the 3d guy...
that you can sort easily :P
It's freely downloadable as a beta from the asgvis site (via free registration).
Don't ask me for more details though, i'm just a wish-i-was-a-3d-guy as well
This is good, because Sketchup people are just not going to learn such a renderer "en mass".
This is bad, because this implementation has very good defaults (settings, materials etc.) so that you can literally get a decent render with a push of a button.
"3D for everyone" may sound cool to Google marketing dep. but for people who try to be on the edge of technology (3d pros), this is a blow...
mmmh.
I wouldn't compare the absolute price this way, Bobby.
The user gets VRay.
That's a tool which is worth at the very least the 800 usds.Calculate the compound price you need to pay to RENDER with vray: you'll see SU IS the best deal you can get on the market.
The low cost of the app driving down the combo, rather than vray driving it up.
My point of view only, of course, no law cast in stone
I work in Baltimore, MD where this company is located. I believe that they are the 3D division of an architectural design firm here in the city. I also couldn't download the Beta version, but I noticed that they are selling some form of the software for $799 as previously mentioned. I thought maybe they were just a reseller for chaosgroup, but it really does seem that they have made their own software that works with sketchup (i called a couple of other sales offices listed on this site and they had no clue about V-ray for SU.)
Can anyone who has been able to try the software describe how it compares to V-ray for Max/VIZ? I'm wondering if you could still make flythroughs and control the lighting as well as you can in Max.
