I just wonder if some workstation is marked as Vista ready. I think it will not happen until nVidia and others make good or any drivers.

Today's situation with Vista is very sad. Even when there are no certified drivers for large amount of hi-end components and whole OS is only expensive piece of crap, most manufacturers will push it with new hardware.

I want to start a flame here, because I want to know what do you guys think about Vista.

I don't want to move under Vista. Not tomorrow, not ever.

I wonder if they will continue to make XP 64 available or if we be forced to switch eventually or will this be a windows ME kind of thing.

Considering 3DSMax still works great on Windows 2000... I really don't expect them to force people into Vista for quite some time.

Honestly, if you can, use Win2k for Max... it has the lowest overhead which means the fastest rendering time.

How much memory can you allocate under win2k ? I have to switch to win64 when needed more that 3GB of RAM.

Win2K has the 2GB limit... you can do more on XP with the /3G switch (don't need to go to XP64 for that)

It all comes down to what OS has the features you need.... but go with the oldest/cleanest OS that you can. Feature bloat kills 3D work.

in fact i found some vista x64 drivers for something obscure that i couldnt get working and they work!

I have no qualms with XP64 (except for lack of drivers) and have been using it for about a year as well... both our 3D workstations are running XP64 now, which means we can start deploying Max9 64bit.

All of our renderfarm though is on Win2K SP4... has all the drivers, 64bit isn't an issue as they're 32bit machines, and with the amount of real memory they have, the 2GB limit is a non issue. Untill we buy 64bit machines for the farm, I'm anticipating it to remain all Win2k.

We aren't planning on purchasing a single copy of Vista until forced to.

I think they have said it will be available for Vista only.
