  • Question about saved LightCache solutions

How is the data stored in a saved light cache solution? Is each frame's data stored independently in the file?

I'd like to use saved LC solution if possible, but need to know if it will work with animated geometry.

Hmm... from what I gather from the help files, what I wan't to do won't work. It seems that Fly-through mode for LC only works when the camera is the only thing moving (similar to IrrMap).

Is it possible to save LC solutions on a frame-by-frame basis and produce a sequence of files to be used in an animation?

You could script something i guess, but it might lead to very slight inconsistancies. You would be better off using a LC/QMC combo

Well, the reason why I'm hoping to do this is because the frames are already hovering at RAM/quality limitations (lot of geometry, lot of displacement) and the render times are about at the limit of what I can accept on our farm/deadlines.

I'm running QMC/LC right now, but if I could pre-calc the LC on my fast workstation, it would save significant time on the render farm, and would hopefully allow me to cut down on memory usage.

why dont you comp in the moving objects as a seperate pass? it will be way quicker and give you more control

Because the moving objects are things like grasses and a pool surface... this is an archviz animation, and can't be easily broken up into layered passes.
