Re: Getting a new computer/MAX and Vray

Craig, thats a great idea, but the ones laying around had the motherboards stolen (someone actually broke into the office and only stole the motherboards out of all the computers and nothing else..) But the IT guys have informed me today that they are currently building me a computer from a bunch of the other ones laying around. I will get the specs in the morning and post them tomorrow. All I heard was dual Xenon and 3+MHZ processors, and a DUAL!! LCD 20" monitor set up.. should be a sweet system..

Not a bad little machine. I have an X2 4400.
Now days the intels are faster and they also have quad core version.
But the X2's certainly are not crap

Im sure you will love it.

            Thanks Daforce,
I think that I will like it too considering that I have been working on an "off the shelf" HP Laptop from 2002!

Hey, another question for you and anyone else out there. I was just looking at the new MAX 9 - with Mental Ray...

How does Mental Ray compare to Vray? After watching some of the online videos on the AutoDesk website - it looks to me like the Mental Ray is a very dumbed down version of Vray (if Vray were my new computer - then the Mental Ray would be an etch-a-sketch...) No?

(also one other note - I will be upgrading MAX from Version 5 to 9 - hope I can make the jump to hyperspace without falling too far behind..)

I dont know much about MR, but it has a few good points. As do all renders. Its shader network is pretty damn cool..scriptable..etc.

However vray is still a far far better render in my eyes, and everyone elses here.

Max 5 - 9 hey. Will be an interesting leap. Just not that none of your old plugins will work. So you will need to get max9 versions for everything
Max9 is pretty neat tho. Be sure to install SP1 and the productivity booster as well, has a few cool features in it.

                  Thanks DaForce,

Don't worry, I will be sitcking to Vray. Just wondering about MR. Yeah, the jump will be big, but fortunately, I don't have alot of plugins - aside from Vray.

Start with the new computer in the morning. Can't wait - its like Xmas eve!!!
