  • how to do a night scene?

    hi everyone

this is my first post here. thanks in advance for reading it.

i've been doing some tests to get a night scene, with lightning from interior and caustics all over the scene from exterior water plane.

i donĀ“t know how to do it.
can anyone give me some hints, please?

    thanks again
    best regards

    hmm....

Well, I think a nightshot is one of the most complex light setups.
I've made some experience with IES Lights from www.erco.com

It' s time consuming to understand the system, and of course it would be a great help to understand which lights you need to to use and how - so that you will get a spefic look.

I think it's an art and a scienece too. I made a call to erco last year, and the guys are really good. They do have proffesions just for light, because lighting an architectural building is not easy.

I still work on better solutions for my own, but I think with IES lights you can really get good results in combination with vray lights.

Here is my first test I made with a little description from last year:

Maybe that will help you a little bit.

      thanks bernhard

As matter as fact i didnt explain the setup to the tests i did.
i'm a rookie poster and my english is not so good as it should be.

in the night scene, with skin i used 3 different methods

1st shot - (in this sequence - ext - int) skin plane - glass plane - vray lights

      2nd - skin plan - glass plane visibility = 0,2 and vray light material - multiplier = 4)

3th - skin plane ( vray light material - multiplier = 4) diffuse skin map

i used to do night scenes long time ago with default lights playing with exclusions and attenuations.

this is my first work with vray

give me your opinion about it

      http://www.imaginevirtual.com/htm/port_3d_02.htm

in this is one i used IES from erco devices with vray properties

      http://www.imaginevirtual.com/htm/port_arq_01.htm

(sorry the website is all in portuguese for now)

With your hints i will do some other tests based on IES and i will post results here

      Thanks again for your time

      best regards

night shots are all about the lighting. Alot of time spent on good looking localised lighting is pretty important. Best piece of advice is to find some great renders/photos and just start recreating it.

if it helps, i explain how to do a very simple night scene here: http://www.vrayelite.com/shack.php
actually i find setting up a night scene is fairly easy. its really very similar to a daylight scene. the only differences are that the colors and intensities of the direct light and environment light are different.
please excuse the site...it really needs to be updated

We are in the making of a night shot and would like to share our settings for the image below.

You can download the file here

                home.casema.nl/e.degraaf173/3d/night shot settings.zip

Maybe it will help you, the file is stripped down to the camera sun and one omnilight. The settings in the file are the ones used to get the image shown, no postprocessing, image straight out of the render.

Be aware huge rendertime, 720x576 cost me 1 hour and 13 minutes on a e6600 core2duo . Some optimization tips would be great!

Dark renders generally take longer due vray having to work harder on the darker samples.

Thanks for the scene Erik should come in handy one day

i d say longer render times are due to all those lights in the scene...rather then the sampling of darker areas imho

Thanks for sharing your settings Erik. I have a client considering a night shot and your scene file may well help me reduce the amount of head scratching I'd have to do!

                            thanks Erik

                            great scene you have there.
probably i will have larger rendering times to test one with the same settings, but it was really helpfull to see them.

                            thanks again
