    I would like to make this kind of bump for a wall texture. I tried using vray displacement and it takes a long time to render and in corners of the geometry it pulls apart 90 deg faces.

    anyy suggestions out there for a good way to do this and have look realistic?

    Use 3d displacement and tick Keep continuity

    Or just use bump mapping.. should do the job as long as you dont need to get too close.

      Same thing as I would've been saying, DaForce. I attached a simple example (for Max9) and an Image of my quick and fairly good result.

      As you might notice, a well set up bump map can do the job as well and this in a very nice way, but it depends on the viewing angle.
      3d-displacement renders longer but produces a much more correct result when dealing with shadows.

        The other thing worth noting is that bump will use significantly less memory than displacement. (as well as being a lot faster)

              I'm not able to give an example with screenshots at the moment, but just apply the displacement you want to use to a plane the same size as your bitmap, check on 'vraynormals' in the VFB and when you render looking directly at it, you'll get a normal map. You dont need any lighting or shaders for this, so you can crank the displacement settings right up.

              Chop it up in photoshop so it tiles (a single edge of pixels will need to be removed) and youve got a very useable and fast solution. I dont think I saved my test render comparisons, but it looked nearly as good as the displacement and miles better than the bump, rendering in about the same time as the latter too.

                Thanks for that. Do you not find it a bit tricky to get the rendered normal map to fit correctly with the original diffuse map in pshop?

                  Ive not had many issues, I tend to render a little bigger than i'd need and scale it down/crop to fit though.
