Get out a real camera and test the settings. What you have in the second example is waaaaay too bright of a sky (but is a fairly common color in archiviz renderings)

Read up on the tutorials in the VRay help files about the sun+sky, you can affect the sky colors by changing values. The default out-of-box values of the vray sun and sky may not match up with your particular local.

This deals exactly with the issue.
It also holds true for newer RCs where the sun/sky and camera ISO have a new model.

          sky

Since there is an issue with the sun/sky cam will having to darken textures still be required or is the issue no that big?
