  • Universal settings???

Should I still be using universal settings? Is it faster and better to use IRR and LC ? I use uni settings all the time but I wonder if I should change

Universal settings are slow as fuck, although ive not used them much, never tried for production. They just always work, no matter what.

If you change over you'll hit a lot of walls at first while you get used to how to optimise scenes, but you'll be able to get similar quality renders out much faster.

I would definately recommend taking a look at Cpnicols VRAY tutorial from gnomonology. Its has a great deal of info on what actualy is effecting the noise in the scene and how to dial it in.

id just like to say that sometimes renderings halt even with universal settings. 99% of the time for us it is relating to displacement but i guess thats another topic:P

IMHO the universal settings are a lot higher than they need to be, but it depends on the scale of the work you are doing i think. For small jobs, maybe its perfect...but for a larger job, maybe its too slow. So i think you will always need to tweak settings depending on the project. Basically you really need to learn how to do this without relying on the universal settings!

Thanks for the support on this... we use these settings (which are based on the Universal Settings) every day and they work great. It is a matter of understanding how they actually work. Which is what I attempted to do on the 1 hour+ lecture on Gnomonlology.

or I could have just looked at the 1.5 help file............

then again.... now on 1.5 final.

I noticed that the image sampler (antialiasing) says "DMC" but paramaters look the same...

i guess the same is true for brute force.....

Although the test image I just did with these "universal settings" look nice.... very long rendering time.......

Yeah Chris....great job on the Gnomonology lesson. I had mostly used the adaptive qmc for most of my scenes based on what i had read in the help files...but it was nice to see an in depth comparison of all three.

I'd say it was the best $7 bucks i've spent but i bought a beer for that much at this place that had a lot of beautiful...ummm...nevermind!
