        really a challenge

        Thank you very much dlparisi...

now I do have really a challenge, instead of having simply dots on the dice, I want to set diamonds...... hmmm...

well, the problem is that the base material from the dice, reflects so much in the diamonds, that the dimaonds can't really pop up...

hmm, at the moment, I have no idea what I have to change...
        hmm....

here is the whole scene file for download. Teh dots are on an extra layer.

        http://www.bernhardrieder.com/ask/dice_004.zip

or should I swith the color and make a diamond looking glas dice, with red diamonds on it.....

I could find a photograph on the www, that's what I woul dlike to reach in rendering...

        thx for every little help,

I think you need to start out by cutting out the diamond shape from the cube since the diamonds are transparent. The trick of burying the dot only works if it's solid. I power booleaned out the diamonds and moved them up from the surface by about a mm. Should be enought to get you going.

            hmmm

okay, so that means, I need to model all the holes for the diamonds I think...... hmm....

You could model one die on top of another, one with the die booleaned out and the other with them still intact. Hide the one that's not booleaned but parent it to the booleaned version. Set up your scene and test render with the booleaned version and then when you're ready reveal the uncut one, decide on the number of dice to show and boolean the diamonds out. For a backup just clone the unbooleaned die before you do the subtraction in case you change your mind on the numbers.

                hmm..

okay, I've tested the pro boolean and that gives me really nice and sharp edges, that works fine.

i've made one render with clear white for teh dice and red for the diamonds.

Hmm, I will try to switch now the colors - because I dould like to get a red dice with white diamonds.... hmm, let's see which issues I have to fix...

well, one very important thing is the mesh from the diamond.
if I compare it with the photo, it has much more sharp edges..

                  by the way...

                  @DaForce:
maybe you woul dlike to give me some support in making a good looking caustic effect too... I've never done that before... would be awesome...

                  thx a lot my friends,

For the diamond mesh you dont want any smoothing at all. So to make sure of that add a smooth modifier and make sure all smoothing groups are unticked.

Yes of course, more than happy to help with caustics.

Have got the file. I just need to tweak it abit so it renders properly with newer builds.

                    Will upload later today.

                      thx

                      thx DaForce, you are great...

I will also try on monday a new test, maybe we can reach a much better result - I would love to render something like the photo... but yes, not as easy......

                        Ok, here is the file.

Its the same one used in the renders. Render quality is not 100% as it was only ever used for testing.
Caustics are produced only by the direct light which isnt part of the GI solution its just there for casting caustics.
That just one way of doing it but generally one of the better ways especially if your doing product shots.

The modelling of the dice isnt perfect there are some 3 sided and 5 sided polys but for the most part is smooths rather well so just left it as is.

Dice material needs work to be photorealistic but shouldnt be too hard.

                          thank you

                          Thank yuo DaForce.

Well, i've tried to match the result from the image, and it seems to be, that this is a much harder challenge than I thought.

My renders are not really looking good.. hmm, don't know what I have to do to get that done.....

I know that my materials are right, but the end result looks always very bad... makes me sad.... ufff....

                              test renderings

Thank you very much DaForce, well, as I said, this little dice is really now a challenge.....

here is what I have done:

                              Scene file: http://www.bernhardrieder.com/ask/dice_001.zip

                              image 2 tested dlparisi's file:

                              Scene file: http://www.bernhardrieder.com/ask/dice_dlparisi_001.zip

thx dlparisi, well, sorry, my diamonds does't really look good in your scene file, tried to tweak, but I didn't get any better result.
Rendertime: uff.... well, I've lowered the settings, but your material is sooo cool, that it renders very long....

image 3 tested scene file from DaForce:

                              Scene file: http://www.bernhardrieder.com/ask/da...rnhard_001.zip

Thx DaForce, I've turned of the caustic for this test, and lowered a little bit the render settings... well, your good looking material is also so cool, that the render time is very long....

Hmm, I've tested a lot to let the diamonds pop out from the dice material - but it's not really very close to the image I would like to reach... I know that's really hard to do.... but maybe we can find a way for such a cool looking picture like here:

Let me thank you all for helping me out here, I really appreciate that much.

Downloading your files now (althought the first link doesnt work.. I cannot download it)

I will try to get caustics working and see if I can tweak it to look like the photo for you

                                <edit>
Seems you just turned caustics off. Turn them back on and your caustics will work.. still tinkering ..

                                will post abit later.
