Could I get an explanation of what exactly what the Gamma Correction Option in the new VrayColor map is doing?
I was hoping it would apply a gamma value to a chosen colour, much like having Colour Correct up the stack with 2.2 applied, or assigning 2.2 in the bitmap loader. This generally makes the colour/image darker but this new option when turned on makes all VrayColor Tex lighter. So it appears it's applying 2.2 in much the same way as applying it in the Color Mapping Rendering settings. I'm not sure how to choose colours like this?

Currently I choose colours using paint swatch RGB values from the paint makers then apply 2.2 gamma using a gamma conversion script in max. This works fine but it is destructive to the colour value in the VrayColor Map, so I always keep a copy of the non-corrected colour in the diffuse slot.

Is this simply a matter of working backwards? When choosing colours have Specify 2.2 On then when rendering turn it off so all the colours get scaled down? Or is the texture map handling the colour behind the scenes so when I render it's going to come out properly corrected?

It just seems a bit odd.

It doesn't allow you to pick a color and then apply a gamma correction to it. Instead set the "specified" gamma to 2.2 and open the color picker. All of the color values have been adjusted for a 2.2 gamma. So if you pick 128 grey on this color picker it is visually a darker color than picking the same 128 grey on a non gamma color picker. You can see the change in the values that Vray is using by looking at the float RGB values.
