  • Fast SSS Detailed Explanation?

    Can anyone detail the new parameters for the Fast SSS in Vray 1.5 (Final), how to use the Fast SSS material and the difference between FastSSS, Vraymaterial with Translucency enabled and a Blend Material with Fast SSS and Vray material.

    I have all three in a scene to test but no matter what I do I cant get the depth to change and I get no effect at all with just a single Fast SSS mat. (Vraymat w Trans and Blend material give an effect but I cant control it.

    It would be great if someone could post a definitive SSS tutorial that illustrate all the methods for translucent objects(including FastSSS)

    Working on it for the updated help index; you will most likely have to use the fast sss material as the base material in a VRayBlendMtl material, and then a regular VRayMtl on top for a slight diffuse component and the glossy hilights.

    Also, by "depth" I assume you mean back-scattering; for this to appear you need to increase the "back scatter depth" parameter (by default it's 0.0 resulting in no back-scattering).

      Thanks Vlado. I have the FastSSS material as part of a Blend and it works but I am having difficulty controling the depth of the translucency effect. I see the backscatter depth parameter but it has no effect. Do the shallow, deep and back radius have an effect? If so how do they all work together? What is meant by "deep"?

        PS-I am having the same difficulty controling the depth with the translucency option in the vray material if I try it with a vray mat alone (no blend)
