  • Standard Raytrace material in 1.5 -- works?

I thought max's built-in raytrace material didn't work with Vray.

I just got a rush job with a max file set up in Vray and it has Raytrace materials along with VrayMtls. a few very quick preliminary tests make me "think" that raytrace materials are okay to use with the Vray renderer.

    Can someone confirm this?

this is not so. I have used raytrace materials as early as 1.43 versions of vray. However, vray will not support many funcitons from raytrace mat. Also it will render slower, and perhaps wont work with physical cam and so forth.

      okay, thanks...

btw, do you know which raytrace functions are incompatible by any chance?

The raytracing ones (e.g. reflections and refractions). They will work, but many V-Ray specific features will not be visible in the reflections/refractions (e.g. V-Ray materials, shadows and lights). If you use a Raytrace material, you must use only standard 3ds Max features - materials, lights, shadows and so forth.

        Best regards,

          Hi davision,

can i ask why you want to use Max Raytrace mats?

I don't want to -- it's a super-rush job and I didn't want to waste time cleaning it up. (Turns out the raytrace materials weren't as prevalent as I had thought)

It just occurred to me though -- does the built-in Vray converter take care of Raytrace materials and convert them properly?
