  • licensing vray for usage & slave render

just searched through the forums and couldn't find anything on this issue. i just upgraded to vray 1.5000, and have installed it on my main workstation using the dongle. works fine - no problem.

i have a notebook which i typically use as a render slave, however i also use it to work on from time to time. i am wondering if there is some way to install vray on my notebook so that it will act as a render slave while i am using my main workstation, but so that it can also run vray in workstation mode if i choose to physically move the dongle over. the obvious scenario is that in my office i like to have the extra rendering box, but i also sometimes need to work on the road.

is there some way the new license can do double duty this way? i tried to install vray on my notebook both as a workstation and render slave, but when i run the second install it wants to overwrite the first.

this seems like it would be a common scenario. anyone have any suggestions?

    thanks.

Should work to just install it as a workstation

but if i installed it as a workstation, when i'm using my "real" workstation, wouldn't there be a license conflict if i tried to network render? it would see that the license was in use on my real workstation. i think i already tried this without success.

it only checks for the liscence when you try to use it in workstation mode (ie open the render dialogue box or material editor etc.) if you just use it as a render slave it wont give a conflict. i installed it on all of my systems in work station mode. with the dongle only on one computer. therefore i can use workstation from anywhere but i could also render as a render farm.

thanks da elf. i ended up finding the same thing. begs the question, why is there a render slave install option?

The slave install option does not install the V-Ray SDK, the V-Ray license server and the WIBU drivers. It also automatically pops up the dialog to enter the actual location of the license server, so as you don't have to do this manually. I've found this option to be a lot quicker to install on many machines with less mouse clicks.

what I would Really like, vlado, is something similar, but with No mouse clicks.

An idea maybe would be to do the install once and have a checkbox to "create xml settings file." Then on the next installs it would have no dialogue as long as the xml file is there. It would just enter the same exact information.

This would be ideal for installing on a renderfarm. I can run the installs all at the same time and just be done. Right now I usually have to check each one manually to ensure the server is correct. I don't like to trust the kvm switch too much.

Well, you can run the installation in command-line mode only; please email us at vray@chaosgroup.com for more details.
