  • Vray Render elements.

    Hi All,
I am trying to render some elements in Vray but am going wrong somewhere.

    Is there a tutorial anywhere???

I have the vrimg file path set, render to memory frame buffer un-checked.
In render elements I have selected VRayBackground and a few others and set the path, name and file type as tiff also I have checked the enable box.

When I hit render it renders my vrimg file but not the render elements.

    Where am I going wrong???.

The render elements are in the .vrimg file; the same file contains all the elements. Use the vrimg2exr tool to extract them.

      Now I feel silly,

Do I have to specify the file path of the render elements as well as the vrimg file?

Also does this mean I will need to modify the exposure on all layers?

i think you are taking a wrong approach here. In max, with vray, the render elements work in the following way:

you must use vray framebuffer. In there you can specify where to save your file. All max paths are ignored. So you really you can leave those as blank. Max will give you a warning that no files will be saved, but internally vray will save them. In render elements you select the passes you need, again leaving all of the output fields default.
If you render to vrimg format, then all of the passes will be stored in one file (per frame). You can then do what vlado has suggested, and convert them to tiled exrs.
Or you can render the passes into .tga or .png for example, then each of the passes will be saved as its own image.

No need to use the vfb or the vrimg (as long as you are not battling memory problems). I prefer to render to EXR and just use the standard render elements dialog, by default it will save the elements into the same folder as the base frames with the element name appended or you can modify the elements locations and names in the elements dialog.

Sadly I am "battling memory problems", my images are 8000pix square so I am rendering them as vrimg.
            Please see my setting below:-

When I render, the vrimg file is generated but no passes, when I convert the vrimg file and open it in photoshop it has 1 layer where are the passes?.

The vrimg2exr tool has an option to specify which channel you want to extract into the .exr file; if you type just vrimg2exr without any parameters it will print a short usage note.

              Best regards,

you are aware that Photoshop doesnt support the additional EXR Layers, are you ? You'd have to extract the elements as vlado described.

                Regards,

                  Hi,

Going back to rendering the seperate pass's. Morbid Angel wrote the following

"You can then do what vlado has suggested, and convert them to tiled exrs.
Or you can render the passes into .tga or .png for example, then each of the passes will be saved as its own image."

So can I convert all the passes to exr at once or do I have to go through and do them seperatly??
