  • Why render irradiance map separately ?

    Hi,
I regularily see in posts here or in tutorials that when dealing with very large renderings, people save an irradiance map with a smaller resolution of the image and then load that to render the full res image. But why not simply reduce the irradiance map rates ?
I mean, for eg : if i need to render a 8000x8000 image. instead of :
    - render the irr map at 4000x4000 (or as low as 2000x2000 ?) with say -3/-1 rate then load it and render at 8000x8000
    I could :
    - divide the rates by 2 and render directly with rate -4/-3 for the 8000x8000 resolution
Wouldn't that be the same ?

Also, is it preferable to render the light cache separately at a lower res too ?

There's more than one way to skin a cat, would be my best guess.
