physical camera DOF working?

  • physical camera DOF working?

    can´t get the physicam DOF to work, even when using very low values on f-number and very close focus distance with "specify focus " (25 meters) on large scale terrain the background at 10km distance isn´t defocused at all. Missing something?

    it will never work with wide lenses. for example, even with f/1.2 a 28 mm lens will give you an infinite depth of field behind the subject. don't know which focal length you're trying with, but you may want to try with a longer one.

      Great link rivoli , thanks.

      Once your focus distance passes the hyperfocal distance you get an infinte depth of field behind the subject. You'll either have to blur it in post or pull in your focus distance so your subject still lies with the dof limits (so it's in focus but the background is no longer infinite).

        puh, now i remember and understand the dof-calculator, should read the forum better, well thanks a lot! physical cam works fantastic, i just need now to keep the classic photography technicals in mind, its like using my good old analogue nikon...

        could you please implement an analogue shutter sound when pressing the render button, would make the feeling more complete

              I thought you had to check the 'use focus' in the camera options to actually have dof apply to that camera?

                "DOF cue tool" is useless, if there is no focal length there is no point in making it.

                  if I remember correctly it was meant as a quick, visual example of how dof basically work (if you had close to no clue about photography). it wasn't meant as a tool to actually calculate what kind of depth of field you might get in a given scene.

                    Exactly!

                    Besides, it's only based on a 35mm focal length. Definitely NOT a dof 'calculator'.

                      You can play around with my doftoy to understand better what happens.
                      It uses a standardcam and doesn't change anything, but you can get a feeling of the diferences between a 15mm lens at f32 or a 105mm at f2

                          Hi,

                          is it right, that the physical camera support DOF at 3dsmax? At Vray for Rhino it isn't the case and it's not sure why. Is it a question of the SDK?
