  • Material Library Organization

Curious to see how everyone keeps their material library files organized.

My initial thoughts were separate interiors and exterior materials and structure the material names like this

    CLASSIFICATION - LOCATION - TYPE - NAME - Descr

So like a normal wood floor might be:

    WOOD - FLOOR - Oak

Variations of the same floor might be

    WOOD - FLOOR - Oak - Polished
    WOOD - FLOOR - Oak - Old
    WOOD - FLOOR - Oak - Matte

    What do you all do?

We have mapped our maps directory on the server to a network path, so for example X:
Then all materials are saved in maps by theire type
    soo
    wood
    metal
    stone

then subdivided in different levels, so
    wood > indoor
    wood > outdoor

We don't change name or something. thats just to much work

      We do exactly as pixelstudio:

Mapped drive M: and maps divided into categories. Furthermore we add a postfix on filename for BUMP, MASK, SPECULAR etc.

We also have IES lights and Proxies mapped on the same ressource

... it doesn't mean its not messy, though
