  • strange reflection/refraction behavior

    Hi,

I'm confused about the effect of reflections on a glass material.

here's a material with white diffuse, black reflection color and white refraction color.

Here's the same material, with 'trace reflections' off in the options rollout of the material.

So the question is, why is a material with black reflection color different than a material with reflections turned off?

With a black diffuse, this effect doesn't happen. Problem is that I like the whitish material, but I can't put reflections on it because then it turns dark again.

maybe if i understand why this happens, I can better find a solution.

Is this in Rhino or 3ds Max?

I suppose it has something to do with total internal reflections and reflections on the back side of the object... turning reflections off will probably also disable these as well.
