  • SLI in max 2008 and vray 1.5

    Hello
To use a monitor of 30 "with great resolution, which of the following options will be better
    Nvidia Quadro 4600
    dual nvidia quadro 1700
    dual Geforce GTX
    dual Geforce 8800 GT

The logical answer is that it would be more expensive, but also say that 3dmax no avail though opengl also the max dont use the SLI .. You know something about that?

    Thanks for your help

I have Quadros 4600's in SLI mode but because of VRAY proxies I can't use shaded mode, it is really fast other wise though with out proxies. But for the money (I didn't buy this ... my work machine, I would try out the 8800 GT and be patient with the drivers since it's a fairly new card...
At home I have an 8600 GT I got for 120 CDN and it's pretty fast for next to no cash,

Hello thanks for your help., the proxies in VRAY make a conflict in SLI?
How is the difference between quadros 4600 and 8600 GT? 50%?

      Thanks!!

Seems to be a general problem with The Proxies we have that are from earlier versions of VRAY, Max 7 1.47 combo. SLI makes no difference, we have lots of machines here in non SLI mode.
Can't tell you the performance for the 8800, I havea 8600 at home it seems to be about 40%
        Cheers

I don't know for 3ds Max 7, but for 3ds Max 9 and later proxies should be a lot faster... (they basically appear in the viewport as regular 3ds Max meshes). It could be that this has made them slower in 3ds Max 7 though. In 3ds Max 9, as far as I can tell, they are about twice as fast than before.

          Best regards,
          Vlado

the 8600 is about 2/3rds the speed of an 8800 GT. (I know, i didn't read enough before i got my first 8600 card at home hehe.. stupid impulse buys.) It was great, until the new gen of games comes out. I've got an 8800GT at home now, and its *very* fast for the ~280 usd that it costs. Basically what I'm saying is, the 8600 = crap, entry level dx10 card.

Between the cards you have listed, the 8800 GTX's are the fastest. I've got a few machines coming with 1700 quadro's in them in the next few weeks, so I'll be able to compare that with my 8800GTX 768 in my current workstation.

            Basically,
Best Value : 8800 GT 512mb's, (G92 chipset, newest out as of now..) (hard to find currently because they're THE card for new games..)

Good alternative between the GT and GTX are the *newer* GTS cards. GeForce 8800 GTS G92 (Make sure its not the G80 version if you do go this way.. nothing wrong with the g80 one, its just not as fast as the newest ones.. why they named them exactly the same thing i'll never know.) but with these I think we can get more memory/card than the 512

Best Speeds : 8800 GTX 768mb (OR Ultra, both based on G80 chipset) but they're not too much faster than the GT's and they're more than double the price.

Most money : 4600 quadro's (G80 chipset, similar on paper to the 8800GTX/Ultra.. i couldn't find any real reason to justify the price jump myself)

            Numbers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari...ocessing_Units

Numbers wise, the newer ATI cards look pretty sexy too, but thats sort of outside of my experience so i can't recommend anything there

              Hi Vlado,
Basically the problem I mentioned to you before was for sure the VRAY proxies from max 7 in max 9 performing slow.
We should look at redoing the proxies I guess, but our main concern was being able to sitll open the files in max 7 if we had too.
Hopefully at some point we can redo the proxies and see a good speed increase. The refresh in max 9 is killed by the old ones.
              Cheers

SLI gives little to no benifit in max view ports

also you've asked the wrong question: as currently ATI's (AMD) video cards offer the best performance in max, out of the consumer level cards the 3870 is very very good value.

here is a few bench marks comparing one card on your list to a much cheaper ATI card.
