Why dont you simply render to exr via the vrimg output ? works like a charm. Saves as 16Half wich is perfectly fine.

Are you using exponential color mapping?

If you are using exponential color mapping and saving out using the Vray frame buffer to exr or vrimg you lose floating point, and z-buffer, matID channels etc.
