  • How to create these light blocks ??

    Hi guys,

Currently working on a project that involves me re-creating these blocks lit from the inside.

Ive tried using a vray light material with a comptex material. One material is vray dirt with radius to about 60mm and the other material is vrayedgetex with 1.5 pixel width. These are multiplied together, but it doesnt work. You cant see the dirt and the vrayedgetex material just makes the blocks look cartoony.

Any ideas how to do this...without using lights

Here is an image of what im trying to achieve.

    Thanks

    Steve

Might help if you post your results

You could try using the vraydirt as a mask between two vraylightmtl, where you have each light material set to a different intensity. That way you can play with how bright the center of the block is and how dark the outside is.

Another way to cheat the dark corners would be to use a tile map in the diffuse, set to make a 1x1 tile. Make the grout black or dark grey, make the tile color the mix of the lightmtl's. Then just set each box to have a 'box' UV map.

This is what i was getting with the above settings...

I actually made up a texture in photoshop and used it in the vraylightmaterial, it kind of works, but still doesnt have that lit block feel.

just set up a gradient map in box mode an map it up to each block s faces
the gradient map gives u the ability to create some fake lighting intensities variations to get some more control over it

Thanks for the reply. I actually managed to do it a different way...i guess i kind of used lights in the end. I just duplicated the blocks...reduced them down, applied a vraylightmat to them all. Then the outside material i made refractive 128rgb and glossiness to about 0.5 with interpolation...and it looks pretty good.

Still needs a bit more power, but im quite happy
