    Any recommendations for a cloud or smoke material? Especially for use with a particle system and facing particles.

    Use whatever traditional map you like, just spice it up with a 2Sided shader. In a dense particle cloud 2sided with GI can do wonders.

        Quite nice! I would lower the opacity of individual particles to get some nice gradients where the cloud is not so dense. Just my two cents.
