here's something which I'm afraid is of no help in a practical, every day's situation. guess I was just curious to see how vlado's direct caustics would turn out:

I think the result is good, but of course it takes loads of photons and memory.
anyway, here's the scene if you want to have a peek at it:

      edit:
      I forgot, couldn't open your scene (guess it's 2008 ), that's why I set up this one.

Rivoli, grazie mille ! yes, the file is 2008, sorry, I could export it to 3ds. Your image looks very nice and I see what you mean about loads of photos, 15000 ! I will try raising the search distance to see if that can reduce the amount.

Visumporec, thank you very much ! I will keep trying out the pool caustics and now see what you mean about the plane subdivisions and noise ! thanks again !

You can try use bruteforce on primary with reflective/refractive caustics enabled - slower, yes, but no need to tweak any caustics
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

I get pretty much the same results with Brute Force as primary; but the photons still have to be tweaked it seems to control the effect.

lol, yes. still looks pretty good to me though, kind of a "unbiased" feeling to it, and it rendered fast. anyway, unfortunately it's not very practical, and it would still need more subdivisions..

What photons are you talking about ?! Turn off caustics everywhere, except this GI one.
