  • New work station advice please.

Sorry I know there r a couple of threads on this subject.
I also looked at the bench mark thread and the vray_cpu_benchmark.xls
I am a bit confused as to if this is a good workstation, is 2.4 ghz fast enough and is 4 gig of ram enough theses days?

Specs our IT guy put together:

    Intel Quad Core 2.4ght
    Nvidia Geforce 8800GT
    Inlet Dragontail Peak Motherboard
    Kinston DDR2 667 2gb Memory X2

    Thanks for looking
    E

It really depends on the size of your scene. If you have an exterior scene with trees, cars, people, buildings, etc... 4gigs might not be enough. I think a quad 2.4ghz is fine, mostly because the price on those Q6600 chips is very good Some people have overclocked it to over 3.4ghz, but I have never tried that so...

just buy 8 gig of ram, the price is so cheap its not important.

you cant buy more for that cpu though have to get a xeon or opteron to deal with more.

also define fast enough? how many of them are you getting?

Be sure to get a 64 bit windows and Max version as well, otherwise it will go unused.

Q6600 rev G0 here, running @3.3 Ghz. reallly fast... and very simple to OC with gigabyte ds3R mobo.
all running under vista64 without problem.
have a look to nvidia 9600 series.. good price, good performances.

            Thanks for the replies/advice.
I think I will go ahead with it. I am going to ask for a quote for 8 gigs of ram and xeon or opteron cpu's, will probably be 2 much $$$$
I am only getting one of these But we r getting some render nodes, intel dual core 2.4 ghz 2 gigs ram Should make life a bit easier

            Thanks
