  • render nodes "could not obtain a license"

    hello,
i'm trying to do some net rendering and i'm getting errors in backburner on each slave saying that they cannot obtain a license. why are the slaves even looking for a license? i always thought that was unlimited. not sure what to do, i know i had this working awhile ago.
    any help is apprecieated.
    thanks

I've gotten this a bit too - the only thing I've changed is using ip address rather than machine names when putting in the license server name. Also the server seems a tad flakey to me - it could be a dodgy usb connection on my computer but it seems to stall every now and then.

We do get this error when the VRLserver goes down.

      Could be related to this...

Good point about the USB connection, I wonder if a problem like that would cause memory to build up as in the above thread.

i dont think its a memory issue since i'm now trying to get it to work on just one slave. still has the license error. i have the vrlserver running on my main workstation, the machine im sending the job from. should i be doing anything special on the slave machine? does it matter what machine the manager is run on?
i dont remember it being this complicated.
        thanks

Are you sure the slaves are pointed to the correct license server? You can check this if you go to Start menu > Programs > Chaos Group > V-Ray for 3ds max > Licensing > Administration > Change V-Ray client license settings.

            thanks vlado,
that was the problem. i have the license server pointing to a machine that didnt have a dongle. a co worker is on holiday and took the dongle to work from home. i didnt realize that the slaves needed to point to a machine with a dongle.

Ok, glad that it's sorted out. The slaves need to be able to connect to a working license server, but they will not actually take any licenses from it.

                Vlado

would it be possible to make the slave check the licence (connect to the license server) when we submit the job through backburner, instead of when the slave starts rendering the job?

I´m very new to netrendering and maybe Im missing something obvious here.... but if that was possible, it would mean I could submit a number of jobs, shut down my workstation (where the wibu key is) and the slave (yes I only have one would render them all anyways.
If I understand correctly I now must keep my workstation running so the slave can check the license at the beginning of each job...

and yes, I could put the wibu key in the slave instead, but then the slave would allways have to be running, even though im not using it.

                /kalle
