transparency

After reading the posts on transparency for leaves on trees where the leaf is a plate mapped with an image instead of the leaf being pure geometry, i was wondering what the best way to set up the material for the transparent leave was to get the best results....speed and image. i'm going to do some tests comparing the two types of trees for both of these.
