  • Vray Displacement Modifier - See result in Viewport?

Is there a way to display the Vray Displacement modifier in the viewport? Or snapshot out teh displaced mesh as it would appear after displacement.

While i would go back to the normal version for render i would like to visualise it in the viewport so i can place some objects ontop of the displaced surface correctly.. so after displacement they are not 1/2 though teh resulting mesh.

    Thanks in advance.

You can use the max displacement to get an idea of what the displacement will look like, other than that no other options.

I tried that but the max displacement modifier dose not seam to show in viewport either?

      <------- Edit
OPh wait... silly me i have to manually increase the vertex count on the mesh with max displacement.. then I can see it.. cool thanks.

Take the displacement map and apply it to the diffuse slot of a new material, apply material to mesh and enable visible in viewport. Thats how I preview my maps while manipulating them for displacement.

yea.. me as well... but i am more concerned with placing objects on to of the deformed surface and not having them inside it or above it.. depending on the map.

The max displacement seams to give a different result. Even with the same values for height and stuff.. I am not using the vray setting displacement override, as far as I know.

Guess I will just do low quality passes and move them .. just take ages i guess.

If you use the regular displace modifier the results should be exactly the same, of course if you have a very complex or rolling terrain type displacement you need a lot of subdivisions to get the contours close. If you are using the displace mesh (WSM) modifier and comparing it to vray 3d use mtl type displacement then for some reason the bitmap output needs to be set to 50% for the max displacement to match vray's.

One trick, if it is a relatively flat displaced surface (like a tile floor) you can set the surface where you want it in the scene and use a negative shift value equal to the height amount, this will keep the top of the displaced surface in the same place as long as they are white.

it doesnt have to be in the diffuse slot to turn on "view in viewport" insleight
