whats neat about mental ray is that each of the cameras can get a lens shader, which in essence is a physical camera, and can be connected to any type of camera in the scene. In maya specifically since each orthographic camera can be viewed and edited as any other camera in scene, such approach is possible.
I guess it depens on which way you look at it, for example if you need the orthographic camera to have exposure and those kind of controls, lens shader allows for those things with no extra work (from developer).
Well i do work with max, so no camera shaders for me. But wouldn't that be a nice feature though for further releases? I seem to have a few customers that prefer this kind of look.

well...to be quite honest, I think orthographic views should be quite easy to simulate anyway. If you put a camera there with lens of 200-400 mm, it should be equivalent.
