    It doesn't work if the GI is off, right?

    Also, it doesn't work with IES vray lights??

    in vray, caustics are not dependant on gi; they use their own form of phon tracing. However, there is another way to get caustics using purely gi, or you can use combination of two. The problem with getting caustics is that you need a really bright pin hole light, they are not very visible with otherwise dim or large area lights.
