  • metals reflections

I'm just curious to know which is your most used way to setup reflections for metal materials:
    1. boosting a lot the reflection ior
    2. using a fallof map into reflection slot
    3. other options?

it depends. I often set up metals with a 2 layers vray blend mat, the base one with really low glossy reflections and the coat one with sharper reflections (to what level of glossiness depending on what I'm after). but generally I'd say 1, tick fresnel and raise up the ior value.

I usually boost IOR value as well but I'm not very satisfied with that way so I 'm looking for other viable options.
I'm trying to put a fallof map into fresnel slot but still I've not understand if it makes any sense or not !?!

Yep - for metals you in theory shouldn't use any falloff - materials that conduct electricity such as metals don't have a fresnel effect so leave falloff off and just use glossy. The main thing with metals looking correct is having something to reflect that's interesting. Otherwise it looks a tad flat.

          now, confusion is growing faster

so with "falloff off" do you mean "fresnel off"? ...correct?

I know about the "something to reflect issue" but I believed that only a perfect mirror was able to reflect exactly the same way in every direction; or maybe I missed something

Is that really true? I thought, other than a mirror and chrome, every material had a Fresnel effect?

Good explanation of the fresnel effect.

thanks for link, very informative but...

...which is the relation between fresnel ior value and those graph!

other than that I can say I would like to fine tune that 10% of values where "the effect of Fresnel reflectance is subtle"
