  • Really super fast (fake) ambient occlusion

    hello,

we all know how to use vray's dirtmap to make AO.

is there another way to make a kind of really super fast AO pass, even if its not 100% correct ?

I would use it to pre-render animations to show to clients before rendering the whole scene with GI and materials ?

    thanks !

I think that the Few sec. it takes for Dirt Map is quite fast...

Mabee you want to try this:

    Works quite fast.....

    or this

      Hello,

yeah, well, it still remains a kind of dirtmap with samples etc...

was wondering if there was another way...

Are you speaking of something like the aproximated non raytraced occlusion in Renderman ?
Blender just added something like this.

Max 2010 will have realtime AO in viewport. Plus soft shadows, dof and motion blur.

Happy i subscribed to the subscription program...

Anyway, the main question could be : how do you guys render pre-vis animations, so that they are "sexy" enough to show, and fast to render ?
(we all do not have a 100 node render station in our basement...)

I think the worse a pre-vis looks the better off you are. Then expectations are exceeded with the final product....

I'd render a simple max animation preview, but do it a higher resolution than you need, downscaling it afterwards.

I've seen animation preview that don't flicker though, always wondered how people were doing that. Thought it could be the graphics card settings.

Yeah doing the same at the moment, but wanted to add some AO in post (simple 'overlay' or 'add')
Maybe with the new 3dsmax 2010 it will be possible, if the new AO display works with vray materials.

for outdoor scenes you could create a dome light consisting of standard lights to fake indirect lighting and indirect shadows
