  • How to work out the amount of displacement?

    Hi

Say one is rendering a roofsheet and is getting the profile shape by using displacement, how do you work out how far away, from the object that will receive the dispacement, you need to place other elements so that the displaced object does not come through the object next to it.

For example, the roof material is a profiled sheet. where the sheets meet one another, flashing will be used to cover the joint. So how do you work out, while you model, how far above the roof sheet element to place the flash element.

    Thanks

    Hi,

The amount of hight you set in the VRayDisplacementMod modifier is how far the displacement will rise. So if you set the Amount to 10 cm your cover objekt should be 11 cm or so above.

if it's a mid grey value where you need the cover, you can take it into photoshop and colour pick that particular shade, then divide the amount you're displacing by 100 and times it by the b% number.

      Works suprisingly well.
