  • Help with stone material

    Hello,

I need to create a stone material like this one...

    http://www.islandstone.com/largeimag...2$hero$1$.html

I have everything looking okay, except the reflection value. I am hoping someone could explain a good way to do this. i tried to look around for a similar mat to study, but noting I've tried works yet...

Here is a clip from the WIP this is for...

    Thanks in advance!

I would suggest trying a VrayBlendMtl. Copy your current one into the base, and add a copy of that in the first coat slot. For the coat version give it some reflection (light grey), use fresnel, and a glossiness of maybe .85 to start, and see how it goes. Tweak the blend value up and down and the glossiness up and down to find something that works.

(You can just use a plain material with 100% reflection for the coat material, as long as the reflection is 100% it won't matter about the diffuse component, but I just find it more intuitive to use the same one. Your call of course.)

        so far

well, so far nothing promising, except that I think a big part of the problem is the viewing angle. I'll trying some other approaches, too...

Viewing angle and lighting angle - it will only reflect like your sample if it's lit like the sample. You may need to put in a card/Vraylight to hit the right angle for it.

            Good enough?

Well, here is an update that was good enough for today's submission to client, so thanks simmsimaging for the tips!
I never used the vrayblend mat before, so I need to practice more, I think.
I ended up using a vray material with a bitmap for reflection. I also used to vray lights (planes) to only affect reflections and specular on the stones only. I'm still not %100 happy with it, but it's closer...

Glad to have helped. It's certainly getting the glossy idea across well.

I would also render out a RawReflection pass and comp that in photshop (or like program) and test various blending modes (screen, linear dodge, color dodge.
