In terms of image quality and the optimizations inside Vray, are there significant disadvantages to using studio-type HDRI images over creating virtual sets and using things like vray lights?
I'm working out some new little tricks for using HDRI's and I find they are very quick to render, easy to setup, and work great with things like RT, but I'm not sure how the overall quality suffers. It seems to look pretty good to me, but I have not had time yet for more really massive testing.
I'm thinking about area type shadows, caustics (GI and photon) and GI in general, noise - do these take a big hit in quality if I light with HDRI only? I am using an HDRI or 3 inside a Vray dome light, and this would be assuming reasonably good HDRI's and not just pinpoints of light on black ?
Thanks,
b
