  • New FastSSS2 shader

It seems the bump in this material has a differente behavior than a standar vray mat.

Its hard for me get the same bump effect. It seems is less intense.

    Is this ok?

Less intense ? I assume that could be due to the fact that the SSS contributing to the final look makes the bump less obvious. Got a sample images ?

Yep, it is normal. The bump is applied only to the specular and diffuse portions of the material, but not to the sub-surface portion. Normally the diffuse amount is to to 0.0 though, so that means that by default only the speculars are affected. If you want stronger bump effect, increase the diffuse amount.

On the left the classic vrayMat, on the right the new FastSSS2.
Same bump map, same amount of bump. Similar specular. And diffuse amount of 1,0 in the FastSSS2.

        Very different bump effect.

Can you un-check the "MAX-compatible ShadeContext" option, and see if it makes things better?

I gave it a try and I think I'm seeing this as well. Max compatible shade context is off. Is it possible the scaling of the bump is different? It looks here like the bump on the vraymat might be scaled up a bit compared to the SSS2.

Works fine for me... note that the default value for Max-compatible ShadeContext is ON.

Turned compatible back on, reloaded all the bitmaps, restarted Max, and it seems fine now. Must have been user error (again)

So if you feel like re-downloading the installation, this is now fixed - the bump will work properly even without the need to turn off the "Max-compatible ShadeContext" option.

                  Best regards,
                  Vlado

Is this something everyone should do if they downloaded sp3 prior to the date of this post ?

Yep, if you plan on using that feature. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Vlado...this is a little thing...but i noticed that when you drag maps from channel to channel, you only get the options for Instance and copy...no swap.

Not really a big deal at all...

Yep, seems to be a 3ds Max thing... I'm not sure how I can make it show the swap option automatically.
