  • vray render and CUDA (again)

I found an older post when CUDA was in early stages, and Vlado said they aren't gonna be using it. Has anything changed? Also, Vlado mentioned they are looking into some better solutions, any info on what might those be?

Also, would it be possible at all for vray to render with GPU? And are there any projections on what the speed difference might be?

    Yes - my opinion

Nope; no info yet until the time comes.

I cannot comment on that unfortunately at this time.

And are there any projections on what the speed difference might be?
Nope. As you know, hardware changes quite quickly; any prediction I might do now will probably not be valid in a few months.

    Best regards,

Cool, as I understand...there might be something?

Can you at least tell us if this is theoretically possible, according to your programmers.

      Thanks

I hope there is good news on the way.

I remember when I got my first dual CPU machine way back in the Windows NT days and was just aching for all of my apps to start taking advantage of multithreading. That's kind of how I feel now with CUDA and OpenCL. Luckily, computers with GPUs aren't nearly as obscure as multiprocessor machines were way back when.

yes offcourse there will be something I guess, crysis still blows my socks off. Everyone is talking about the island outdoor environments, but what I was most impressed with was the inner alien organic environments, real crazy geometry/lighting/shading/motionblur in realtime.

Spoilers ahead:, but if you are no gamer go ahead

            Characters:
            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2yveyei0s8 real great scene!

And we are not even talking about physics yet:

I played this on an 24 inch with a heavy machine and SLI, in directx10 full quality, these vids do no justice to the quality, it looks 100 times better. Gameplay is great too, this is the best game I have ever played till now.

And this is an old game... wait to see what idsoftware will come up with in doom4, that will nuke everything else...

Realtime/gpu will be huge, I'm not exactly sure how this example relates to cuda, but I think it is close enough.

Keep in mind that ANY game asset while running in realtime usually takes a LOT more time to prepare and set up (baking lighting, creating normal maps tweak tweak tweak) so dont expect a standard offline scene to look as good as a crysis level even when rendered with the same tech.
