Verified Images and the Vray Physical Camera

Has anyone got any experience of this? What is the accuracy of the Physical Camera's Distortion and Vertical Shift?

Or, are people still marking the horizon line and making that central the image to be matched, then using the old Max camera?

We're just about to undertake some verified work and it's been a few years since I've done a proper verified image and have been thinking about the approach, and the new tools available to me. If anyone has any experience on this I'd love to hear about your methods.

The "Cubic" distortion mode of the physical camera is the same one used by camera tracking software like SynthEyes and Boujou; it has been verified to be close to the results from actual cameras.

I dont do them, but I know the guys that do here just use standard cameras and do it the old way with the shifted horizon line.

You know I use the physical cam and never had any issues. You can always do the cam match on the shift image with the standard cam then convert the cam with lele script.

my company has been producing verified views using vray cameras for years, and we've never had any problems with them whatsoever. In my experience the key to the sucess of a verified view is to get the highest possible quality photograph taken using the best available camera and lens (our photographer has an arca swiss large format setup with a phase one p45+ digi back). Any laser gps surveyors worth their salt should be able to produce accurate data for the actual match

Out of interest, what kind of focal length (in 35mm terms) and resolution do you acquire from that camera? (of course, planning images tend to be around the 50mm mark)

The photographer we use is Jeremy Young and you can get him on 07860 715369

In 35mm speak I know one of his lenses works out at 26.9mm or so, and i think the other one comes to about 36ish mm. The quality of his images are just incredible and makes you realise that those PhaseOne backs are light years ahead of even the best SLR you can buy at the moment (1DSmk3 or D3X). Mind you, when you add up the cost of his kit you realise that such quality comes at quite a price (the lenses alone for those cameras cost about £4k each and they're the cheapest components)

You found inaccuracies with the viewport representation, if you match the exact lens and position using gps, tracking etc. the physcam should do fine.

To do an accurate match for Verified you need to match the render to the photo anyway, the viewport is only really a guide.
