  • irradiance map 'reuse' question

When I render an image with irradiance map, after it is finished, how do I make sure that the map is saved so I can reuse it for rerendering the scene (to test other stuff like AA or so). I'm a fr user, I'm looking for something like 'reuse solution'. I'm confused about all the options (advanced irradiance map modes, don't delete on, autosave,...)

    thanks for any help,

If you want to keep and reuse the irradiance map between rednerings, simply set the mode to "Incremental add to irradiance map". This will cause VRay to use as much as possible from the irradiance map that is already in memory. You can later on save this map to disk.

Keep in mind that if you change lights or materials or objects, you will need to reset the irradiance map (the one in memory will no longer be valid).

For some more information you can look at this:

I tried rendering the sample scene provided on the tutorial page. I don't
see any GI being calculated. I have it turned on with the irrad. map as well. Scene is very dark - show direct light only. I'm using the demo version.

To be able to see the irradiance map passes you need to check "show calc. phase", is that what you mean?

PS: Dont forget to turn on the Indirect illumination

Thanks for the reply Goncalo. I have the Indirect Illumination turned on,
and I tried using single frame for the irrad. map setting. Very dark scene,
with direct illumination only on surface objects. I'll verify the output with
the "show calc phase" selected. Will update.

What about the environment over ride in the render dialogue box?

And the problem solver award goes to Dave !! Thanks man. It woked.
Is that setting "always" required, or is it based on the lighting characteristics of the actula scene. IE, sklight vs. Vraylight, vs Max light,
vs. photometric light, vs. etc. That was aboost of confidence to a CG guy that is an old lightscape user !! Thanks again guys.

its really simple: the environment acts as a skylight. since your max environment was probably set to black then youll only get gi from your secondary bounces of your scene objects. Environment overide does the same thing except it doesn't actually change the environment color in your scene, just the color of the skylight so to speak.
