  • Single Vs. Mulitframe

so, single frame creates a new irradiance map for every frame (& deletes the last one). Multiframe incremental calculates the new irrad. map based on the last one created. my question is, if your rendering an animation will multiframe cause artifacts? and if so why use it?

my guess at the moment would be that Multiframe incremental will be quicker (it only needs to update the new samples) but it will cause artifacts from the frame before to show up.

any help clarifying this would be great.

This really depends on the type of animation. If nothing but the camera moves from frame to frame, multiframe is a good choice. However, if objects in the scene move it will not work well at all, and you should use single frame.

Do a forum search, or look at http://VRay.info for more detailed information.

thanks egz, I usually use incremental add to current map so I'm Ok with walk-throughs. I want to know if you can use multiframe (adds only the last irradiance map to the current one & deletes the rest) for full animations?

I'll try it out tommorow and see what results I get.

To save time calculating a completely new irradiance map for each frame?

for a flythrough, i have precalculated a multiframe incremental irmap, but it wouldn´t render in the network. seems to me, it doesn´t work with saved irmaps. maybe the name is a little misleading.

Andre: this should work fine. try using unc paths to the saved file (\\server\share\file) instead of local or mapped driveletter paths. Also check that the renderslaves have permissions to access the location where you saved the file.

thats what i did. max just hangs up when it tries to load the precalculated multiframe-irmap. and i have had no success with calculating a irmap as a networkjob (on a single machine, of course), which is due to the fact that the animation is treated as single images, i suppose.

                andre,

What size did the imap end up being?

50 mb for a 225 frame tunnel sequence.

I hope a fix is in the works, my Irrad map would work but I'm getting betterter render times when I use single. is there something I'm missing when I use from file? basically when it comes to rendering the image, using the saved Irrad map slows things down.
