  • OS question

    What is the 64 bit preferable option, xp 64, vista 64, 2003 64, windows 7 ?

We are on xp 32 and need to go the 64 bit way now, please do drop a line and help out the OS challenged.

Now the simplistic castrating part ... max 2009 with vray sp3a, wich 64 os will help for speed the most? Keeping in mind stability.

Systems are Core i7 920 @ 3.2 and 6 Gb ram. Will probably talk them to go 12 Gb's.

    Thank you for you time.

as soon as Windows 7 is released on October 22 I'm going that way (64bit) together with a new I7 and 12MB. I'm currently on Vista 64bit with no problems. (Windows 7 is much faster apparently) Search in off-topic, there is a post there about Windows 7.
    Kind Regards,

Thanks for the info DVP3D and tip on off-topic.
Going to check if we can get some sort of deal to get vista 64 with a path open for a later windows 7 switch.

as far as I know if you buy a pc now with vista, you will get windows 7 as a free upgrade. Check with your local distributor to confirm.
        Note:
Distributor, not PC retail shop. I find retail shops a bit clueless when it comes to highend stuff and latest IT news. (well in my location anyways)

I'm using Vista x64 at the moment. I have been using it for a long while now and I have never run into any problems. It's robust. I am moving to Windows 7 when it's available officially. I have a few Macs and Windows Vista 64 and Windows 7 runs hunky dorey. I couldnt have run 32bit up until now as I would have needed the memory. How did you take advantage of 6GB with 32bit OS? Gate?

Yep DVP3D, was thinking about something like that sort of deal, didn't know if it was already possible, so good to know.

            Hi DHFrame.

We actually used PAE with 3Gb switch and the 2 remaining Gb's are used for caching with an app that can address it. It is in-house coded. Does for very fast previews with mostly 720p pal material or simply raw caches.

What did you meant by "Gate?"

              Sorry I meant switch.

              Your current setup sounds intriguing.

Well the cache app is on its way out, all the ram will be there through direct addressing.
The thing now that kinda threw me a curve ball was watching that "next step" v-ray rt with the use of Cuda and future use of openCL.
Guess we will have to consider a motherboard update to accomodate a tri-sli and become the envy of any gamer. Seems like v-ray could even go gpu+cpu with openCL. All good with me. Bring it on.
